Project Aurora Borealis - Food and Cost in Tromso Norway

In March 2017, I traveled to northern Norway to chase the Aurora Borealis. Other than the magnificent Northern Light show, I also enjoyed the wonderful restaurant food Tromso Norway had to offer. Food was not cheap in Norway, some visitors were buying groceries from the supermarket and cooking in their apartment kitchen. Being a solo traveler in Tromso Norway for only 5 days, I figured it would be more cost efficiency if I were to dine out and explore as many restaurants and cafes during my stay in "Paris of the North"

RISO MAT & KAFFEBAR
Strandgata 32, 9008 Tromsø, Norway

A trendy cafe that serves gourmet coffee and tasty omelette.

The omelette they served had a special color and texture to it. I believe it was because of the cheese and cream they mixed into the egg. Omelette plate and kaffe latte double shot cost me about about $14 USD or 120 NOK.

The exterior of the cafe restaurant is very unpretentious, yet this place received very high rating on Tripadvisor. The food and the ambiance did not disappoint me

RA SUSHI & BAR
Skippergata 16, 9008 Tromsø, Norway

Why did I go to Tromso Norway to eat sushi? because the restaurant serves some fresh locally caught fish and it was one of the restaurants that closes late at night. The nigiri sushi were made by skillful sushi chef, but their seasoning and sauce were less traditional. The taste was as delicious as they look. Besides their locally caught or farmed fish, such as Lofoten cod and Norwegian salmon, I found it interesting that they also serve "special fish" on the menu. I ordered 10 piece nigiri combination that cost me about $30 USD or 255 NOK. An additional of Ten to fifteen percent tip is a common practice at this type of restaurants in Norway.

They would serve you the "special fish" unless you ask them not to. I believe they would replace it with other type of nigiri sushi ingredient upon request.

Lofoten cod had a light sweetness taste and firm texture to it. They serve you a nice generous cut that showcases the texture of the Norwegian Cod fish. It was definitely one of the tastiest sushi toppings I have tried.

World famous Norwegian salmon in Norway served as nigiri sushi was buttery and melted in my mouth.

KNOLL OG TOTT CAFE RESTAURANT

Storgata 62, 9008 Tromsø, Norway

A classy restaurant cafe that serves great sandwiches and light meals in Tromso Norway. I ordered Baguetter sandwich $10 USD/85 NOK and Varm drikke kaffe latte $4 USD/35 NOK. The street view was nice too.

Nice and classy decor of the cafe restaurant at KNOLL OG TOTT (photo description)
This place is definitely one of local's choices for a quick bite. Many guests order their sandwiches for to go.

The chicken inside of the sandwich had a very nice spice/aroma to it. I remember it had a bit of curry flavor.

Emmas Drømmekjøkken or EMMA'S KITCHEN

Kirkegata 8, 9008 Tromsø, Norway

This restaurant was recommended by the hotel staff, who mentioned that the restaurant almost received a Michelin star if it was not for the the lack of access to freshest vegetable in the arctic circle. The service, decor, and food were definitely of the highest quality in town. I recommend making a reservation online before your arrival because it could get quite busy on Saturday nights. The total cost for the three dishes I had was about $43 USD or 360 NOK. An additional of Ten to fifteen percent tip is a common practice at this type of restaurants in Norway.

One of the most classy and well decorated restaurants in Tromso Norway. Great service and chit chat with the waitress when you are traveling alone.

Appetizer size fish soup had a very delicate flavor and nice chunks of cod fish in it.  This dish was about $10 USD or 85 NOK.

Starter portion Deep Fried Cod Tongue (pic description)

Perfectly fried to golden brown Lofoten Cod fish tongue was one of the restaurant's specialty dishes.  Nice firm texture fish meat had no weird or fishy taste. This dish was recommended by the waitress at Emma's. The cost was about $11 USD or 90 NOK.

Emma's Fish Au Gratin, technically it was baked seafood macaroni, was one of the house special dishes the waitress recommended highly. Robust seafood and cheese flavor topped with bacon chunks was a great choice at Emma's. This dish was about $22 USD or 185 NOK.

EGON RESTAURANT

Storgata 50, 9008 Tromsø, Norway

With a nice advertisement on the main street in downtown Tromso, it was hard to miss the thick and juicy Lofoten Norwegian Cod. This casual fusion restaurant serves some American dishes, pasta as well as some Norwegian theme cuisine. The cod fish dish was about $26 USD or 220 NOK. I left an additional ten percent tip on the table after I finished my meal.

The advertisement was hard to be missed on the main strip of downtown Tromso.

Egon restaurant was relatively casual when compared to Emma's kitchen. Multilingual menu and friendly waitress were a plus.

Thick fillet of Lofoten Norwegian cod topped with light Pesto sauce were a perfect match to showcase the sweetness and firm texture of the cod fish. Bacon on the side could also accentuate to the complexity of the flavor.

SKARVEN RESTAURANT

Strandtorget 1, 9008 Tromsø, Norway

This casual restaurant bar serves some dishes that are the favorites of the locals in Tromso. Recommended by my hotel staff, I stopped by the restaurant on the second day of my trip. Situated by the harbor, the view was phenomenal. The menu on the wall was written in Norwegian, I simply asked the restaurant staff for their recommendation. The beef stew dish I ordered was about $15 USD or 120NOK.

Nice restaurant bar setting. I bet this place is packed at night because it seems to be great bar for beer and wine.

Tender beef with robust flavor and a hint of sweetness from the onion were very well arranged by the chef.

Self service soup and coffee bar. I believe coffee was also included in my order. Menu or "Meny" was written Norwegian language, just ask the staff in English about their recommendations.

Skarven restaurant in Tromso is nice place to relax and enjoy planning my next trip to Japan. Reviewing my own recommendation on my other blog on Traveling in Japan: Tokyo Consult Travel Blog.

BURGER KING

Storgata 84, 9008 Tromsø, Norway

When in doubt, everyone can always count on the consistency of quality and the long opening hours of franchise fast food restaurant, Burger King. Inexpensive price, expected taste and quality offer great value in an expensive country like Norway. The hours are different between weekdays and weekends, I believe they open til 2 or 4am on Friday or Saturdays. Please check the opening hours written on the door. There were no major difference in menu when compared to the Burger King restaurants in the US. Combo meals were about $10 to $12 USD.

Affordability, quality of food and reliable opening hours were the reasons why I visited Burger King in Tromso many times during my 5-day trip. There was no difference in taste when compared to the US Burger King restaurants.

PALETTEN GRILL - KEBAB
Storgata 53, Tromso 9008, Norway

Nice middle-eastern flavored food after long hours of Aurora Borealis light chase tours. This restaurant closes at 2 or 4am and it was perhaps one of the only few choices in downtown for a quick bite at that time of the day. Great taste and the heat from spice could warm you up from the harsh weather of the arctic circle. This Kebab dish was about $9 USD.

SEVEN ELEVEN 7-11 AND OTHER CONVENIENT STORE
Strandgata 31, 9008 Tromsø, Norway

This one and only Seven Eleven convenient store in Tromso Norway is perhaps the northern most on our planet. This shop is supposed to open 24 hours per day and it did not disappoint me during my 5-day stay in Tromso. The shop serves relatively inexpensive sandwiches, coffee, water, and other beverages. Since most of the shops in Tromso are closed on Sundays, Seven Eleven convenient store would be the savior for your first day if you were to arrive on a Sunday. Bottle water was about $2 to $4 USD. Sandwiches were about $6 to $9 USD.

Posters of reasonable priced sandwiches were posted on the storefront.

Similar shops at gas stations offer even more selections of food and beverage. However, gas station shops are usually not opened 24 hours per day.

We had a quick stop at an inland area gas station shop during one of my Aurora Borealis light chase tours. I recommend using their bathroom and packing up some sandwiches/water before the Northern Lights chase tours.

SUPERMARKET - COOP Prix
Storgata 67, 9008, Tromsø, Norway

There were plenty of supermarkets in Tromso Norway that could offer an alternative to food during your stay. For someone who does not cook, supermarket is still the best place to pick up cheapest priced bottle water, beverages, and snacks. There were a few Cool Prix supermarkets nearby my hotel within 2-7 minute of walking. 8-22 means they open from 8am to 10pm on weekdays, the number 9-22 in parentheses indicates they open from 9am to 9pm on Saturdays. No mentioning of Sunday hours indicates they are close on Sundays. Some fresh fruits were about $1 to $5 USD per kilogram.

Kiwi Pluss supermarket situated in downtown Tromso had one of the largest selections of products in town.

Fresh fruits and vegetables in Arcitic circle were readily available in downtown Tromso.

I believe Biola yogurt beverage is Norwegian's favorite brand for probiotics in the morning. Smarthotel Tromso, the place I stayed at during my trip, serves Biola at their morning buffet.

I believe Litago is Norwegian's favorite national brand of flavored milk beverage. I have tried their strawberry and chocolate milk during my stay in Tromso. The taste was similar to other brands of flavored milk I had in the US.
